Artistic Scholarship of the Marshal of Lower Silesia for Dr. Konrad Urbanowicz
We are honored to announce that Dr. Konrad Urbanowicz has been awarded the 2025 Artistic Scholarship of the Marshal of Lower Silesia to develop a pioneering project: „Color in Glass”.
The artistic scholarship is a chance to continue exploring the endless possibilities of glass as a medium – its light, its transparency, and its power to transform ideas into lasting forms.
Scholarship goals and implementation
The project’s goal is to develop a new process for transferring multicolored photography into artistic glass casts.
The inspiration for this project comes from our earlier work on the Anti-Soviet Partisans’ Memorial in Wrocław (2020–2024). For this memorial, we’ve developed a groundbreaking method of embedding historical photographs into glass in monochrome form. Using laser-cut molds and original digital graphics, the technique captured both the symbolic and emotional dimensions of remembrance.
The next step is to introduce the full spectrum of colors into glass – enabling sculptures that not only preserve details, but also communicate emotions and history through vivid hues. Just as photography once transitioned from black-and-white to color, glass art can now mirror this evolution, enriching its narrative capacity.
Technically, the process will explore layered casting methods, with glass of varying thickness, transparency, and pigmentation, creating optical effects that shift with light and perspective. This innovation opens new possibilities for public art and contemporary glass sculpture worldwide.
Planned outcomes
This project is an opportunity to expand the scope of the artistic expression and explore new possibilities. The goal is to create works that are not only visually striking, but also thought-provoking and emotionally resonant.
